PDF is the best way to distribute documents on the Intranets so that others are not able to modify those (and you can secure the format too!).
You could use one of these options:
1. Use WordViewer on the Network - be able to view documents and not change them
2. Word has several layers of document protection. Depending on what you are looking for you pick one -
a) Require a password to open a document, or
When you create a password, write it down and keep it in a secure place. If you lose the password, you cannot open or gain access to the password-protected document.
Open the document.
On the File menu, click Save As.
On the Tools menu in the Save As dialog box, click General Options.
In the Password to open box, type a password, and then click OK.
In the Reenter password to open box, type the password again, and then click OK.
Click Save.
