Is Audit of Employee Canteen Food within the scope of OHSAS 18001?

Thank you all.
I am sure such controls are of paramount importance, especially when it comes to Health matters. Unfortunately, sometimes it requires to pin point a set of words from the standard to convince guys easily. That was precisely the reason why I was looking for some requirement that can be interpreted to the controls on stuff prepared in the canteen (could be too specific to expect though). OHSAS has never been my cup of tea, just a colleague of mine came to me with this query and apparently I turned towards the best information resource I knew.
Further you may think to consider under 4.4.7 the emergency situation of "Food poisoning" and how the organization will respond to such emergency situation .....

An Organization serves Food for its Employees in the Canteen. Does OHSAS 18001 obligates the Organization to audit quality of this food periodically? If so, could you help me with the relevant requirement?

Contaminated food is a biological hazard for people ingesting it, so this hazard should be identified. However, if this hazard is not considered significant, relatively speaking, it might not be treated via engineering controls and internal audits.

So, just because a hazard exists, it does not necessarily mean that it's associated risks have to be managed.

In internal audit of the cafeteria would be advisable (IMO), if there have been previous cases of food poisoning, or other potential reasons, e.g., new cooks, new crew, loss of refrigeration, pest infestation, etc....

Hi !

This volontary British Standard is mainly focused on occupational risks. If the compagny opens a canteen, this activity goes well in my opinion in the field of OSHMD directly regarding employees working in the canteen and indirectly for employees eating in the canteen...

But at first this canteen activity will be primarily subject to legal national mandatory standards (the regulations !) ... and I would be surprised if your national regulations does not require different checks regarding quality of conservation preparation and provision of food in your canteen ...

The direct requirements of regulation will therefore serve volontary principle requirements of the ? OSHMS standard. This is why any MS standard gives high priority to regulations.

Drinking water and food is important to check because that could be potential emergency as per requirements Ohsas 18001 4.4.7

Hi Raffy !

To do an audit is not to have one or more tools*. It's an professional activity. We learn it (training). To audit the "X" item in a company (for exemple its OSH management or its regulatory compliance) requires knowledge, skills and experience on two levels: the audit technics and the "X" item...

* combination of documentation review, observations, interviews, and oriented thinking... but no chek-list !

I use the turtle approach and do process audits. My "checklist" is a lined paper formatted to record:

Hazards/Risks, and objectives to address them
Documents used in the process
Operational controls
Measurements, instruments, calibration due dates
Personnel awareness and type of training required
Records
Emergency response
Nonconformance

Data in this form can be followed up with in further audits, for example review the calibration of instruments and maintenance when auditing Facilities, and revisions of documents in the Document Control process audit.

I attached a couple of examples. I hope this helps!
