Is Calibration Required for Non-Adjustable Commercial Inspection Devices?

#1
I would like to ask if you feel commercial devices, such as tape measures, weld fillet gages and machinist scales require calibration and you reasoning as to wht or why not.

Welcome to the Cove. This subject has been discussed extensively here over the years. What's being asked, essentially, is whether devices that can't be adjusted need to be calibrated. A definition of "calibration" is in order. In its simplest form, calibration is comparison to an accepted standard, and doesn't imply adjustment. I don't have a copy of the 2015 version of ISO 9001, but in previous versions the calibration requirement began "When required to ensure valid results..." and that should be the guide. If a set of radius gages purchased from a reputable source is periodically checked for wear and damage, formal calibration shouldn't be required. The same applies to linear scales and to some extent, tape measures.

Someone will doubtlessly come along here and disagree, but that's the way I always treated these things.

In 9001:2015:
7.1.5.2 Measurement traceability
When measurement traceability is a requirement, or is considered by the organization to be an essential part of providing confidence in the validity of measurement results, measuring equipment shall be:

Ummmm....I would say "it depends".

What requirement(s) do you have to live to with respect to M&TE and calibration?

For example, let's say your customer requires all M&TE to be calibrated or verified against standards traceable to NIST. If you are using that tape measure or scale to approve or reject product, IMO it better be calibrated or verified as required.

If a customer has a requirement that all persons measuring parts must wear a pink tutu, then they had better be wearing a pink tutu when measuring parts. Clearly, customer requirements must be honored if agreed to. The question is, I think, about practical necessity and not whether there is an extrinsic requirement.

For b2b relationships, yes.

On the other hand, in most of business-to-consumer contexts, obviously, customer have no mandates/requirements related to this. If your product is a chicken coop, chances are the people making the coop will not use verified measuring devices because the risks of a dimension being off by 1⁄4 or ½ inch is tolerable.

Well, quite true, but I didn't see where the OP spoke of a business-to-consumer context.

We don't know whether they make chicken coops or aerospace parts, which is why I said "it depends". Many times the customer requirements are not obvious, but buried a bit in tons of PO text or separate quality codes, so I thought I'd add that caveat.

It all depends upon how you have written in your procedures. For example, we have written like this, "Steel Rulers and Tape Measures are not used for precise measurements and hence do not require Calibration. These are replaced, if damaged or become illegible"

Think about this way.
