In regards to having definitions in each of the documents where it is referenced. That would make the most sense but what I found at my last employer was that the definitions would not be consistent from document to document as time and updates rolled on. That was my motivation to think about a one-stop shop for definitions.

Language is ambiguous. I am a huge fan of operational definitions to try and eliminate confusion. Definitions can help avoid assumptions in meaning. You could refer to ISO 9000:2005 and some other source like the Oxford English Dictionary. You don't have to create and maintain your own glossary or definitions.

The bear eats, shoots and leaves.

Pandas do that, not bears. :tg:

Also bear in mind that the OED is a dictionary of British English, in the main and costs a lot of money. For good ol' Amurican English, I like the American Heritage Dictionary.

:agree1: Use "official" or "arthority" sources whenever possible. When one has to create one's own definition (such occasions do exist), be careful, precise, and consistent.

To support the opinion that definitions are necessary, here is a quote from a recent FDA warning letter for medical device cGMP violation of complaint handling:

"• The term “early warning” which may elevate a complaint to the level of a CAPA is not adequately defined in (b)(4) Complaint Handling."

Thank you very, very much for supporting my point about language being ambiguous and that operational definitions are useful.

1. Pandas are classified as bears. Bears are mammals of the family Ursidae. Pandas are in the Ursidae family. Modern bears comprise eight species in three subfamilies: Ailuropodinae (monotypic with the giant panda), Tremarctinae (monotypic with the Spectacled Bear), and Ursinae (containing six species divided into one to three genera, depending upon authority).
2. The reason I wrote “The bear eats, shoots and leaves” was a literary allusions to a great book. Eats, Shoots & Leaves: The Zero Tolerance Approach to Punctuation by Lynne Truss. The presence or absence of the comma after the word “eats” changes the entire meaning. Without consistent use and understanding of punctuation, language becomes even more ambiguous. Does the bear eat, and then shoot, and then leave? Or did the bear eat the plant shoots and the plant leaves?
3. As you know the Elsmar Cove is an international forum so “good ol' Amurican English” may not be appropriate.
4. I only suggested a source.
5. I suggested the OED because that is the reference the Technical Committee 176 to ISO on Quality Management Standards uses if the word is not in ISO 9000:2005. Since the posting was in the ISO 9001 forum, I thought I would suggest was TC 176 uses.

This will only benefit those with an Apple phone but I bought the New Oxford English Dictionary app for $29.99 USD. The printed book is $60USD. It has 350,000 words, phrases, etc. I can electronically search. It is awesome!

Andy I am working in a stamping plant and I get an Audit Plan on line and changed some of the processes to work for us. On one column is has Process Type CP or SP. I was wondering what CP or SP stood for.

Hmm, that's a problem when you use others' documents. Who knows what they may mean? Continuous Process? Special Process? Just a guess, and probably wrong...

We have a glossary within our IMS manual - from previous audits we deemed it necessary to document the meaning of key phrases or terms used within the manual and we state the following:

For the avoidance of misinterpretation and doubt, where no guidance or concise definition is provided by any of the above documents (ISO 9000:2005); <The organisation> will take reference from suitable resources and document the definition for use within the IMS, its policies and throughout the implementation of the IMS.

i.e. what is customer property?
This have avoided many debates with our external auditor
