Is it mandatory for a Calibration Lab to be ISO 17025 accredited?

During one of the customer audits, it was pointed that our calibration service provider is not accredited to ISO/IEC 17025?

Is this a requirement? We have had this service provider who is ISO 9001 certified and has traceability to NIST standards.

But are they competent? ISO 9001 isn't a check of competency of the lab. Calibration isn't just about having a documented process and traceability to NIST. Do the lab know how measurement uncertainty plays into their results, for example?

Great responses. I had not considered the measurement uncertainty aspect of the calibration service provider. Thanks Ajit and Andy

It's only required if the industry (like stijloor pointed out) requires it, or if there is a customer/contractual obligation.

Is there a problem with this vendor?

yes , if you are a IATF16949 certified company. Even Auto OEM would ask for a certified lab report.
But ISO 9001 or 13485 ( Medical ) standards doesn't mandate this requirement.
