Is NDC needed for gage used for ATE? Automated Test Equipment IC Testing

Hi, I am handling ATE IC Tesing in my company. and we are using %Grr by Tolerance (instead of TV). As the objective of the ATE is to screen-out failures.

MSA 3rd Edition introduced NDC in MSA. from the forum threads, noticed that the NDC do relelated to the %Grr (using TV).

Thus, I am wondering if NDC really needed for my case?
if do, how can I correlate my %Grr to the NDC?

thanks

You are correct. ndc is another measure that relates the measurement variation to the process variation similar to %GRR (TV).

In your situation, the P/T Ratio (please note that %GRR by Tolerance is not the correct term since MSA 3rd ed. was issued) appears to be the correct choice.

Hi Miner,

Thanks.

Can I say if we use %P/T in our MSA, we do not need to calculate NDC?

The two measures evaluate different aspects of the gage, and are not mutually exclusive.

P/T Ratio measures the suitability of the gage or test equipment to make pass/fail decisions to a specification.

%GRR and ndc measure the suitability of the gage for process control, capability studies, or statistical studies such as DOE, etc.

Since the same gage may be used for both purposes, all measures may be appropriate.

In your situation, you stated that the gage is only used to make pass/fail decisions to specification. This makes P/T Ratio the appropriate measure. Since the gage is not used for process control or statistical studies, %GRR and ndc are not appropriate measures.

Since the gage is only for pass/fail decisions, wouldn't it be more appropriate in this case to do an attribute study?

No. An Attribute study is designed for a gage such as a Go/No Go gage that can only make a Pass/Fail decision on a single tolerance (e.g., the USL OR the LSL).

While the gage in the earlier post was being used to make a Accept/Reject decisions. It does provide variable data; measures against both the USL/LSL limits and provides info on where the product is within (or out) of specification.

A statisitical study that uses variable data is more powerful than an attribute study. It also provides information on where the variation originates. That is, the problem may be caused by for Reproducibility or Repeatability.
