Is PPAP suitable for Inhouse parts?

Hello,

Our company (Dubai) has a new development project in the works that is currently undergoing the APQP process. Pre-production is currently underway, and PPAP for supplier parts has been completed.

We are receiving various parts from our Indian branch, which has also submitted PPAP paperwork.

My boss has asked me to create PPAP documentation for the parts made in-house. Is the PPAP technique suitable for in-house parts?

If so, what types of documents am I able to create? There are 150 in-house parts in total. Isn't it feasible to make PPAP documentation for each component separately?

As a result, could someone please advise me on the common documents that are suitable for all 150no's of inhouse parts?

First off PPAP is not a "technique", it is essentially a collection of documents to prove that you know what you are doing and you are doing what you said you can/would do. :)

There are 18 possible elements to a PPAP - so you technically could have 18 documents per part. But that likely won't be the case.

That being said, if you did go down this path, I would suggest that you meet with your "boss" and determine/understand why they want a PPAP for the parts? Does your "boss' even know what a PPAP is and what it entails? What is he hoping to achieve?

After that discussion, maybe return and more guidance can be provided.

In general, I would hope that you already have many of the elements that you would just be collating into a single location. At minimum, I would hope that you have these elements and these would be a good start for this "boss" ask:

Process Flow Diagram
Process Failure Mode and Effects Analysis
Control Plan
Measurement System Analysis Studies
Dimensional Results
Appearance Approval Report - if relevant
Customer Specific Requirements - if any

As Optomist1 said above, it all depends on what you are making and what statutory, regulatory, industry and/or Customer based requirements already exist.

My company make some automotive components and for those we supply PPAP’s, however the overwhelming majority of what we produce isn’t for the automotive industry so we have a “minimum” self-imposed documentation requirement for every job that consists of:
Original drawing, Numbered (ballooned) drawing, Control plan, First Article Inspection Report, Machine Tool List, Material certificate, and any additional process certificates like Plating or Heat Treating etc.

You may have a similar set of documents that promote/support internal control, and like mine they would make up part of a component PPAP anyway.

You may not need an entire PPAP, however there may be a value in having a standardised set of documents for each component.

“We do what we do to keep the f@#k up fairies at bay” and my set of documents have pretty much kept them at bay since their introduction 11 years ago. :)
