I prefer using 'non-conformity', funnily because it can be pronounced easier than 'non-conformance'! :tg:

Plural of 'non-conformity', as many others have mentioned, 'non-conformities'.

Plural for 'nonconformance' would be 'nonconformances' just like 'performance' and 'performances'. :)

There's no hyphen in "nonconformities." To rid ourselves of this issue, I propose that we say nonconformances nonconformities "egregious transgressions."

Actually it means conspicuously or flagrantly bad. :read:

By whom? The turgid prose of ISO standards seems to be a good hint that ISO is not a good source for English usage information.
Jim,

I too share your dislike of the ISO prose. But here we are talking about the use of standard terms to convey universally accurate meaning. In this case failure to fulfill a requirement.

One day even six sigma teachers will stop calling a "nonconformity" a "defect".

Nonconformity probably translates better than nonconformance.

Standards may be boring but I am sure you agree they are essential for use in contracts, control and improvement.

No matter how turgid our few hundred standard terms are, we can liven them up with the other 100,000 words or so of our respective languages.

Sorry John, but the fact that anyone cares about which term to use is evidence that we are spending too much time worrying about things that make no difference. BTW, a "nonconformity" is a type of "defect," whether it refers to a defective product or a defective process. If I say "This product is defective" there's little danger that anyone will think I mean that it conforms to requirements.

Not every nonconformity is a defect.

Quite the opposite. Defective product is always nonconforming, but nonconforming product isn't always defective. There's a clear distinction between these terms in ISO 9000. Nonconforming product doesn't meet requirements, and defective product doesn't work the way the customer needs it to work.
If I say "This product is defective" there's little danger that anyone will think I mean that it conforms to requirements.
True. But when the lawyers subpoena records of nonconforming product, it will make a bigger difference. If you called it "defective" and then had a disposition of use-as-is, they'll have a heyday. Dollars will start to flow the wrong direction...
