Is this procedure truly calibration?

sjared, does this involve LED? What are the specific technical standards regarding this?

The questions thus far have been general and usually I would go to controlling the current rather than depending on lightwave as the guiding standard.

However, your question and subsequent suggest more.

It is LED, and we had to test to IEC 62471. Funny you should mention not depending on light energy in favor of current because I have been gently trying to offer this as a resolution in light of the difficulties of capturing a good, repeatable measurement with high intensity LED without resorting to very expensive equipment that requires a lot of technical skill to operate. :frust: But I'm pretty new to a lot of this, so I'm not sure how hard to press the issue.

So you are working with Class II or better LED based lasers? Photobiological can be quite tricky, and control of the source, and of spurious light influences, seem to be crucial. That is especially true due to the variability of the source itself. LEDs can vary as much as 5nm. Of course, across a total range from about 200nm to 2-3 micrometers, that is not worth spitting at.

Control of the current allows more a precise and stable approach, and achieving the desired light energy can be targeted using calculations, then verified with the light meter. You are correct that it is also simpler, and requires less tweaking than reliance on the light meter.

Could you point me to any reference materials that would teach more thoroughly how this is done successfully?

Hi all,

I'm not sure if this is the correct forum, but it seemed the closest. Our company manufactures a device emitting a high intensity light source. At one point in the manufacturing process the electrical current required to produce our specified light output is deteremined with a piece of measurement equipment. This process is being referred to by many in our company as "calibrating the device." My question is whether this truly is calibration, because my understanding is that only measurement devices are calibrated. And if it isn't calibration, what is a better term for this process? Thanks in advance.
Hi Sjared,
I agree with you in relation to monitoring and measurement devices.
Citing 7.6 clause of ISO 9001, I think that you can talk about "calibration" of the tool you use to montior the light emission of the product. Calibration term is isually inflated , probably it is better to speak about " verification" or " adjustment". However, as to your product, I would tend to say that it is a a measurement control during your process flow against agreed spec with your customer.
What about?:bigwave:
