Is your company web site information up to date?

#1
I have just been having a look at some of our suppliers websites, and among other things taken a peek at the Certification info presented there....

Oh dear, oh dear....:nope: Quite a number still claim to be certified acc. to ISO 9001/2:1994. Why is it that some people cannot see the value in correct information on the WWW? Companies that are often quite stringent concerning information elsewhere, seem content with Web based info that is totally out of date. So why have it at all, I wonder...

Have you seen the same thing?

I have experienced the same thing with some of our suppliers.

One of our objectives is to improve our internet presence and update our website.

We have searched the web using 5 of the major search engines and keywords that should produce a link to our company website, determined the hit location (1-1000) and aim to improve our hit location. After we have updated the page, we will search the same 5 search engines again and determine if we have improved our presence. We will continue this process until we are satisfied with our hit location.

A basic disconnect between Quality and IT

Simply stated, any company which has a serious gap between the content providers and the folks responsible for maintaining the company website is really demonstrating a a serious gap in its overall Quality Management System.

If we only consider Document Management and Control, the responsibility of the person or department giving final approval to release and distribution of the most recent version of a document (includes upgrade from 1994 to 2000 versions of ISO) is also responsible for seeing applicable parties are notified of the revision and that obsolete versions are withdrawn. In my view, obsolete versions of a website are as damaging to an organization as obsolete versions of a product blueprint at the manufacturing site.

Is this too harsh? I don't think so. If it were my suppliers with out-of-date websites, I would call attention to the discrepancy immediately. If it were my prospective suppliers, I'd make a point of asking them to explain the disconnect before considering giving them my approval.

If it were a customer? It would depend on the relationship. Most of mine I would have just given a friendly phone call. Some, I would never broach the issue without a gun to my head.

I was referring to our Internet website for the improvement goal. The information is accurate but limited.

Our intranet site is updated by me and is always accurate. As soon as I receive approval on a document, it is posted to the intranet, e-mail notifications are sent and training requirements are generated.

As for our suppliers, if I find a site that is not updated, I call and let them know that their site does not reflect conversion to the new standard and request a status update via fax or e-mail.

You can count on it... We'll simply ask them if they still hold a certificate.

I agree. It's official information about the company. Obsolete information is not a very convincing way to convey an image of a company dedicated to quality.

During our last TS surveillence audit,,,, we were asked to pull up our website with the auditor looking over our shoulder to ensure that all of our info, was correct. (TS2 and ISO 9000:2000 certified). A sister company, (under different certification) had not, and was issued an NC.

I issued a finding during our recent Internal 14K Audit. The Manual states that the Policy is available via the company website. Well...it used to be. Turns out some folks in IT removed it and changed some links and didn't think to tell any of us. We had one very upset EMS Coordinator who practically demanded the finding.

What was the nc against? Where does it say that web information shall be accurate? I would not accept the nc. I might go as far as to look at the registrar's site to see if it was up to date.

OT: What if you told the auditor that you don't have a website, when both knew you did?

Good point. But where does it say that any information shall be accurate? I do not want to single out web based information. Info is info, be it on the web or on stone tablets... The media is irrelevant.

If your written procedures say that you shall provide information about your certification on the web and you don't... you get nicked, and quite right too.

It is not mandatory to present information about your certification at all, but there will no doubt be something in the agreement with your registrar saying that you shall provide correct information about your registration... no matter where you choose to do so.
