EMS Training

I have been a QS9k Internal Auditor for 8 yrs. I was recently promoted to Quality Manager with the task of implementing ISO14001. Will I need Lead Auditor training for both? The only class I attended was for ISO-14001 and QS9k Internal Auditor training. Never a lead auditor course.

Mike-
I think it would help you to take the lead auditor course for both. They deal with far more than the plain auditing courses do.

Mike I conduct training courses for a couple providers....one of them I would call a major global one and my recommendation is this:

An EMS-LA course would be OK and you would get some good info out of it, but unless you're going to do auditing all the time and 3rd party registration stuff save your money. You would be better served taking a 2 -3 day implementation course and an Internal Auditor course.

I'll be more than honest with the next. You already know at least 75% of what you need to know if you are trained and experienced with 9K2K. What is happening to you happens to everybody, your getting wrapped around the axle because of the word "ENVIRONMENTAL". Take that word and round file it. Focus on the term "management system". What you are going to do is implement a "management system" that is going to be centered around just another 1 of your organizations core processes. That's all!! This is a portion of my approach when I conduct training courses.

When you implement your system, do it in such a way as it is transparent within the organization....it's not a special way we do business, it's just the way that we do conduct business.

In my openion, Legislation and Regulatory requirements are to be known which are additional in EMS over QMS. So one may choose to have a training course on Environmental Legal requirement.
In my country it is organised twice in a year. I hope in your country that must be there.

Legal and Regulatory stuff

This is a good point, Manoj. However, Mike Lead Auditor training will not give you to "Legal and Other" stuff. If you have compliance experts, you might not need a lot of this either.

I agree with Randy, but I would also keep my eye open for any classes offered by your state on environmental compliance. Here in Michigan the Department of Environment Quality is very active in running seminars and workshops.

The key is "management".

I have completed 14001 specific seminars and classes, DEQ (Michigan Manufacturing) seminars and training classes, Red Cross mock environmental audits and emergency preparedness, Federal Emergency Management training, and completed one year of college for environmental health and safety. I and my employer have spent more than 5k for some of this training.

All together, I learned more on my own through the state web site for free.

I still don't know anything but at least I know where to focus my attention in relation to our environmental system.

Michigan has a great site. Pennsylvania and North Carolina have fantastic sites too, in fact I refer to them when I'm delivering implementation courses for XXX and XXX and the other XXX as excellant places to obtain good "Free" information.
