I
The ISO 20000 IT Service Management Standard has today been published. Based upon the BSI standard, BS 15000, it comprises two cocuments:
1) The "Specification for Service Management", ISO 20000-1.
2) The "Code of Practice for Service Management", ISO 20000-2.
The implications of this are actually very significant in the ITSM arena. For the first time we have a globally recognized framework, and one which ultimately will be certifiable.
The other important aspect of this is that it is aligned with ITIL. This is a complex relationship, but is perhaps simplified by the commonly referenced diagram, known as the The ITIL Pyramid. This shows the hierarchy of structures usually in play.
This concept is also illustrated by the certification schemes:
- The ISO 20000 is ORGANIZATIONAL in scope
- The IT Infrastructure Library is PERSONAL in scope.

The new standards can be obtained from:
Standards Direct (ISO 20000)
Or as part of the starter and support kit: The ISO 20000 Toolkit
FURTHER INFORMATION
Understandably, information is rather thin on the ground at present. However, a number of organizations are currently very active in terms of implementing this, so hopefully we will get some feedback soon (I'll post it here when my colleagues report back).
This is certainly going to be one for the future... a major one.
