ISO 7.3 - Are we exempt or not?

My First Post - I was reading the posts on 7.3 Design and development and am hoping for a little clarification.

We are currently not registered to any standards - moving toward ISO 9001:2000 in October. This is a fairly new automotive parts manufacturing operation with several levels of parent companies who are registered to several different standards. Everything has been going fairly smoothly so far, we are able to get some direction from other plants mainly our sister company who is currently QS registered moving toward TS next year.

I want to exclude design - We manufacture to Drawings and Raw material provided by our customer - we have very little if any input that would be funnelled to our customer through one of the parent companies. Usually yes or no answers. Our customer normally makes their own prototype parts, however if we are already manufacturing a similar part they sometimes ask us to cut down a one off part to use as a prototype - again very basic - (eg cut 2 cm of metal off one side)

We are responsible for designing the manufacturing processes, assembly lines including type of equipment, layout, Quality testing, etc.

One of our sister companies includes the design element with respect to designing of the processes and assembly lines. Can someone clarify if we should incorporate parts of 7.3 or completely exclude it.
Thanks, Kathryn

Just Wondering!

Katie or Kathryn,

Well, how did you come out on your goal of registering in October? Did you go with 7.3 Design and Development? I was reading through the posts on this requirement to help me understand how to approach it for a job shop manufacturer, when I ran into yours which had no responses (at least not posted). That is unusual for The Elsmar Cove Forums! Usually you would at least get a welcome with your first post!!!!

Welcome to the Cove, if you are still around!?

I feel you are exempt from design. The other things you mention would fall under Product Realization. But, I've seen others who design their own tooling to make a part that the part design, dwgs, etc. were accomplished by their Customers, who feel that they have to include design in their processes. I have always figured that if you design a product/system from scratch, that is real design. JMHO ;)

I mentioned a case like this in another post a while back. In that case, they were selling the tooling to the customer, so it was considered product. If you own the production tooling/equipment you don't have to apply 7.3.

Now if TS 16949 comes into the picture (you mentioned automotive) then 7.3 must be applied to ALL design of both product and manufacturing process...

Oh, and I'd welcome you to the Cove too, but it looks like you've been here longer than me. :bigwave:
