ISO 9001:1994 Upgrading to ISO 9001:2000 or ISO 9001:2008?

Hi all, I have a question for everybody

I´ll appreciate your soupport.

We were certified in 2001 in ISO 9001:1994

In the last years, a little effort were spent in maintenance
and audits.

Now we want to spend resources in Quality system for two reasons:

1- In order to improve our control of the processes.

2- In looking a certification

Obviously we don´t want to begin from scratch, the idea is to use the old documents, updating the procedures,policies, and quality manuals, since
our processes are about the same.

My questions are:

-Is worth the effort focusing on the 1994 or should I try to update
to the requirements of 2000 or 2008?

-Are those requirements very different from the 1994?
We know quite well iso 2001:1994, should we need to learn
new things for the 2000, or 2008?

- Is it possinle to be certified for the 2000?


Other point I suppose exist some deadlines as for the certifications
according the version.

Any comment would be very appreciated

Your 1994 version certificate is no longer valid !

The changes made to the 2000 version where very significant compared to the 1994 version. Changes from 2000 to 2008 where very slight / none.

If you are migrating from a 1994 system to an up to date one, go for 2008 version.

Plenty of posts and info here in regards to changes from 1994 - > 2000 - > 2008 versions of the standards. Please use the SEARCH funcion (top right of the screen) and you´ll find plenty of info.

Most customers want to see that your system is 2000 or 2008.

-Are those requirements very different from the 1994? There are a lot of changes between the 94 and 2000, not so much between 2000 and 2008. 1994 is more of an inspection program, where 2000 is more of a business management program.

There is quite a bit that you will have to learn with regard to the new starndards. Requirements for measure customer satisfaction, management reviews, continuous improvemente, etc.

- Is it possinle to be certified for the 2000? I believe that all new certifications that are now being issued are to the 2008. If you have the certification to 2000 you have 24 months to bring your system to 2008. Don't quote me on the 24months, any one else know more regarding this??

Validity of certifications to ISO 9001:2000

One year after publication of ISO 9001:2008 all accredited certifications issued (new certifications or recertifications) shall be to ISO 9001:2008.

Twenty four months after publication by ISO of ISO 9001:2008, any existing certification issued to ISO 9001:2000 shall not be valid.

QAMTY, there are some very large differences between the 1994 version and the later versions (almost no difference between 2000 and 2008).

These include:

  • taking a process approach (not just procedures)
  • strong focus on customer satisfaction and on quality management (away from just compliance)
  • far lower need for mandatory documentation (hooray)

Just about anything you read on the 2000 version and its big differences from the 1994 will apply to the 2008 version as well.

Buy a copy of the ISO 9001:2008 standard and read it. You will soon see how different it is although many of the same concepts are still present.

When ISO 9001:2000 was introduced many said that it was nearly the same, just that ISO "shuffled the deck" from restructuring. Taking such an attitude was a BIG dis-service to any company that accepted the idea. It left them with inferior documentation and completely they missed the real object, that of turning the standard into a very powerful management tool.

It is up to your company. Do they just want to get by? Or do they want to embrace the standard and obtain real benefit from it? It is actually more work to just try to "get by".
