ISO 9001:2000 Certificate - How to have a 3 year validity instead of 1?

We are iso 9001:2000 registered and our certificate is valid for one year and some where i observed that they have the validity of 3 years, i wanted to know how this works, to have 3 year validity do we have to do any thing special or that suits to some special catagories only

From what I know, the certificates of registration are valid for a 3-year time period. Are you thinking about yearly (or another appropriate frequency) surveillance audits?

What particular industry (sector) are you in that limits the certificate of registration to only one year? I may have misunderstood your explanation. :bonk::bonk: From reading your profile I learned that you are in the automotive business. Is that correct?

Some of my Fellow Covers may have a better explanation. We'll see.

Start by talking to your registration company. They may have made a mistake about one year. If they didn't make a mistake they should be able to explane why it is only for one year.

I'm not aware of any reason for it to be only one year.

ISO 9001 certificates are normally valid for 3 years but keeping it is dependent upon continuing to maintain and improve your system which is verified by at least 1 surveillance visit/year. can we ask who your certification body/registrar is?

Could it be possible that the Registrar limited the certificate to 1 year considering the anticipated expiration of ISO 9001:2000 and the release of ISO 9001:2008?

Just thinking out loud....;)

You can not get a 3 year validity for ISO 9001:2000 version as a new 2008 version is expected by the end of this year and the certifications to 2000 version gets invalid after 24 months of the release of 2008 version.

Refer this Press release - 20 Aug 08 which states -

Validity of certifications to ISO 9001:2000

One year after publication of ISO 9001:2008 all accredited certifications issued (new certifications or recertifications) shall be to ISO 9001:2008.

Twenty four months after publication by ISO of ISO 9001:2008, any existing certification issued to ISO 9001:2000 shall not be valid.

Your next certificate as per ISO 9001:2008 requirements would be definitely issued for 24 months. :)

I believe that the OP's organization obtained certification last year.
The limited certification time should have been explained to them....
Maybe the OP can enlighten us....
