ISO 9001:2000 Certificate - How to have a 3 year validity instead of 1?

We are iso 9001:2000 registered and our certificate is valid for one year and some where i observed that they have the validity of 3 years, i wanted to know how this works, to have 3 year validity do we have to do any thing special or that suits to some special catagories only

When exactly was your certificate of registration issued?

I believe that the OP's organization obtained certification last year.
The limited certification time should have been explained to them....
Maybe the OP can enlighten us....

Yes, lets wait for the OP to come back but I doubt that the certificate could have been granted last year. If it was last year, they surely get for 3 years.

Thank you gentlemen, yes, we got the certificate last November and we will have another external auidit in the month of October but i seen very clearly on certificate it is getting expired in the month of november,08.

Here's how to get the exactly correct answer.....Dial 1-###-###-#### (use the appropriate phone number for your Registrar) and ask them, because only they know for sure. Additionally, read the contract you have with them because there may be some provision concerning this subject.

You relationship with your Registrar and the specifics about your registration are in your contract, so regardless of what anyone here says it's your contract that will be your guidance.

ISO 17021:2006 implies a 3-year certification cycle in paragraph

9.1.1 The audit programme shall include a two-stage initial audit, surveillance audits in the first and second years, and a recertification audit in the third year prior to expiration of certification. The three-year certification cycle begins with the certification or recertification decision.

It is possible, however, that the CB might issue a new certificate after each annual surveillance audit.

There are many possible reasons for a certificate with 1 year validity. For example, the certificate might have been transferred from another CB, and it is common practice to keep the original expiration date.

You are right, ISO cert has to be renewed every year, cert expiry date is 1 year fr issue date. There will be 2 surveillance audits for 2 consequent years after initial audit, followed by re-assessment (major audit) in the following year. Our co. has just passed the 1st surveillance audit and rec new cert!

According to auditor, surveillance audit will not cover 100%, it's done just to ensure the ISO sys is well maintained, doc are recorded accordingly and have continual improvement in place. Then, 3rd year after initial audit will be the re-assessment audit, it will be a thorough audit that they will look into greater details.
