I'm probably being blind, but where does it state that you only have to have procedures for those 6?

TIA
ISO9001:200x where it states that a procedure is required. It references those 6 require procedures. Look at the paragraphs in the standard that require a procedure.

For example:
ISO9001:2000 said:
Corrective action
The organization shall take action to eliminate the cause of nonconformities in order to prevent recurrence.
Corrective actions shall be appropriate to the effects of the nonconformities encountered.

A documented procedure shall be established to define requirements for
My emphasis added in bold.

Shawnann:

You may, of course, have any number of procedures, as long as you meet the minimum requirements. Since the standard tries to focus an organization on (and emphasizes) 'processes', some people have used other forms of defining these, rather than use documented procedures. FWIW - I've tried to find out why it's only these that 6 only are required to be procedures, but to no avail! Perhaps they should have addressed it in the 2008 version! Who knows?

Well right now we have a procedure for each area of the manual, which to me is way too much, at least for our small company.

I kind of got pushed into doing all the quality stuff for our company (I'm an accounting type person) so it's all blah to me  and a lot of it doesn't make much sense to me (which is why I became a member here). The owner did everything on his own (not knowing much about ISO 9001) and from the start we've been told we've got way more than we need. So now that I'm keeping track of everything I am slowly reducing and removing what we don't need and taking 17 procedures possibly down to 6 would be a great start!

Just be careful. Some of those procedures might be critical to the Organization and the Customer.

Just because the standard requires at a minimum, 6 procedures, don't limit yourself or the Organization.

I understand that, but I know there are a few that we can remove due to being added because when we started out the owner thought we HAD to have a procedure for every section of ISO. So in doing this, we've added unecessary procedures/steps that we normally wouldn't have done or didn't do before becoming ISO certified.

This is why I LOVE this board! I have found out so much stuff that we were able to update/change from being a part of this board and I thank of all you! :thanx:

Hi, I've just registered with this forum because I'm about to start writing up ISO 9001:2008 procedures and forms as part of a client's QMS implementation and I was searching for some ideas/information/existing examples, etc. to help me. Didn't really know where to start but, luckily, I found this site (through a google search) and it's been a blessing! I'm afraid I don't have any gems of wisdom to share (yet!) but I simply want to say thank you to everyone, who contributed to the sharing of information. It's put my mind at rest about what I'm expected to create and will make my role much easier. Thanks everyone. :) Sinead, Dublin, Ireland.
