I still don't understand the purpose of the Amendment on clause 4.1.
When they wrote "The organization shall determine whether climate change is a relevant issue.", do they mean that CC is relevant issue considering:
1. The (negative) contribution that the activity of the organization is leading to CC,
or
2. What CC is affecting the activity of the organization?

I'm not positive what the intent is, but yesterday our Auditor approached it from both angles. We added to our SWOT and interested party requirements that we have "determined that climate change is not a relevant issue at this time" during our last management review and he found that acceptable.

Pretty much it as an example.

It should be number 2. Consider this post

From what I read on ISO 9001 Auditing Practices Group Guidance on: Auditing Climate Change issues in ISO 9001, the more I think It's 1, and not 2..
Although I my opinion 1. is a question related with of ISO 14001.
What shoul be done by organizations on ISO 9001, is clearly 2."What CC is affecting the activity of the Organization.

It's nearly impossible to demonstrate a negative. Can you PROVE CC is not an issue for your company or QMS? Can you PROVE there are no non-black crows on the planet?

As of 2024-10-28 the poll results are

I've got it built into every audit plan and of course all the clients I've served were notified in advance and provided with the IAF/ISO communique that I think Sidney showed us. There's been no pushback yet and yeah some discussion, but then again I've been doing environmental stuff since the standard came out and was an environmental safety guy before that in California.

After a lot of work we just got our ISO 9001 certification earlier this year (man, what a learning process and this forum has been invaluable) and our auditor was very thorough but never once mentioned the new climate change amendment.

I was aware of the amendment prior to the audit so I did add it in to our risk assessment matrix as a possible external risk to be discussed annually during a management review as it could be argued that it could effect us at some point in the future (for example we have had an increase of wildfires right near our facility in recent years) just to cover ourselves if a future auditor decides climate change is something they want to dig in to. Very minimal addition on our end that I feel should keep everyone satisfied at this time.

As far as I am concerned (and my opinion could change) climate change has no effect on the quality of a product produced or service offered, and is therefore irrelevant to ISO9001 "Quality Management Systems Requirements". However, climate change should certainly be considered as a need and/or expectation of "relevant interested parties" (which includes the general public (public opinion), existing and forthcoming legislation etc etc.)

Strange to think that when I was at primary school we were told that global temperatures were falling and we were on our way, possibly, to the next ice age. Some years later an university we were told about something called "entropy" which will always increase (and is linked to global temperatures, hence in general terms, will always go up). Then we had "experts" telling us about global warming, now they say it's climate change.
I don't think that anybody really knows, but it is being used as a great excuse for increasing taxation by many countries......
