ISO 9001:2015 vs AS9100D - Register to one or both Standards?

Quality Pros,

We are getting ready to start our transition of ISO 9001:2008 to the 2015 version. I was informed that the new AS9100D standard is 80-85% the same as the 2015 version with some additions. We will get the AS9100 version to save some money, but I wanted to ask if it would be worth just going for AS9100 certification instead of the basic ISO9001 version.

Let me know your thoughts.

The short answer is "it depends..."

What would be the benefit? Do you have aerospace/military customers? Do you have customers who are asking for certification to AS9100? Would you get more contracts/business if you were certified to AS9100? Do you know how much additional cost you would incur for AS9100 certification? Do you see a benefit to complying with the additional requirements?

Thanks howste. You raise some good questions. I was not sure what the AS9100 standard was for so you have given me enough info to start asking the right questions. Thanks for the addition to the thread title, I hadn't thought of certifying to both.

9100 is for aviation, space, and defense organizations. It contains all of ISO9001 plus ASD specific additions.

Unless things changed from ISO9001:2008/AS9100c if you are registered to AS9100d you are automatically certified to ISO9001:2015. Most certifications (including my companies) say "ISO9001:2008 and AS9100c", but as Howste said, it depends on what benefit you would see to registering to the AS standard.

If you are doing work for aerospace and/or defense customers, or plan to, yes, get AS9100D and you will also be ISO9001 compliant, as AS9100 is ISO9001 + A&D specific additions.

Folks,

Just because a company is designing or building hardware for aviation, space or defense customers, doesn't mean that AS9100 would apply. I've run into companies that build tools and fixtures for their ASD customers, but nothing that flies or functions as mission equipment.
