Changing the direction of the discussion... With the current situation of COVID-19 it will not surprise me if a higher emphasis is given for businesses to have a contingency plan or business continuity plan. The current standard has 8.2.1 e but I believe most organizations have put their own twist to this and most auditors have gone with the flow. ISO can give a clarification on the requirement and put more emphasis on it- maybe even similar to IATF.

At our organization we log and review every complaint (even the irrelevant ones). Examples of irreverent complaints can share is "FYI - Skid 5 had 20 boxes on it, and just wanted to let you know the label on Box 15 was crooked". This is the relationships we have built over the years, if they tell us about it it is a complaint. We determine if it's irrelevant or not. During audits I have even been asked why we would log something like this and count in in our scorecard.

Just to remind people of the commercial implications of an ISO 9001 revision. ISO makes money when they sell standards and they have a vested interest in developing a 6ᵗʰ Edition of ISO 9001 so they can boost their profits. On the other hand, they have to be careful not to create major changes every time they revise their best selling standard, for fear of backlash by users and potential decoupling of industry standards such as AS9100, TL-9000, IATF 16949, etc...

When ISO released the 3ʳᵈ Edition of ISO 9000, in the year 2000, it was a major departure from the previous edition (1994) and the outcry was loud. To soften the blow, the 4ᵗʰ edition, issued in 2008, was promoted as an "amendment" with some "minor clarifications". The clarifications were, for all practical purposes, totally insignificant and even for the experts, there was NO DIFFERENCE between ISO 9001:2000 and ISO 9001:2008. Nevertheless, ISO insisted that a new revision was necessary, instead of simply confirming ISO 9001:2000 for another five years, during their review cycle. Through the CASCO and IAF, they insisted that certificates issued to the 2000 Edition had to cease to be valid after the 3-year grace period.

Very likely, we will see an "amendment-like" approach to the 6ᵗʰ Edition of ISO 9001; i.e., minor tweaks, enough to justify the need for users to buy the revised document and create a validity expiration date for ISO 9001:2015 certificates, but without adding any major changes that could upset the applecart.

Commercial interests at the forefront; that's my prediction for the 6ᵗʰ Edition of ISO 9001.

If a customer stated the gumballs are too old in the lobby, why not put it in the log. Maybe the reaction is to 'log only.' Keep reviewing the log.

When 20 people complain about it in the same year, do you still ignore it? Or do you wait for the one important customer to say something and check the log and say "wow, you are the first to mention this."

If you don't collect data, it can't be transformed into information.

It is up to the organization to decide how to respond to the complaint.

One change I would like to see is to get rid of the quality policy. I see too much time spent on the quality policy in audits yet looking at suppliers, customers, and companies I have worked at, I see zero correlation between the quality policy the company's actual quality performance. Spending more audit time on real world quality factors in the standard might cause a few more companies with poor quality and poor compliance with the standard to get a corrective action or even fail their audits.

Instead have a standard quality policy or two that everyone can use. I guess having a custom policy could still be an option, especially for less common business types.

I see a lot of companies screwing up order intake repeatedly. I see lots of certified suppliers return corrective actions to us that do not meet the minimum requirements of the standard. Fifteen or 30 minutes spent on either of those two topics would improve quality more. Not every audit sample would uncover these problems, but the odds go up if more time is spent.
