ISO 9001 and Requirements as related to SAFETY - Procedure Control

...Safety rules are part of our orientation program. To ease the system, we put all of the orientation in to the ISO program. Orientation includes general rules of conduct, brief job description, mission statement, work hours, etc., etc., etc. It just seemed to make more sense to put it all together...

Same here. The Plant Manager goes through the "Employee Handbook" stuff, then I get 'em and go through the QMS stuff, and then I give 'em to the Safety guy for RTK, MSDS, LOTO, personal protective equipment, overhead crane, forklift, etc. training.

This is done on their first day here - it usually only takes 3-4 hours.

We have orientation training that lasts about 4 hours mostly safety and a quality policy video. This is done before their 1st day.

Then they have a 90 day OJT training and evaluation

Then within 14 days after their 90 days I get them for the formal QMS training for 3.5 hours

Then on going training.

We used to pile it in all in the same week and at one time in the same day. We found that many did not return for the first official day of work and many only worked a few days. With an average cost of $5000 per employee for initial training, we spread it out.

One word - Integration.

you'll still face the nitty gritty of getting the guys who feel the safety system is all their own to let you get your claws into it.

The Safety Committee still owns the safety program. I haven't put "my claws" into their stuff. However, we work together in orientation training, work environment, etc. The ISO 9000 & 14001 issues will appear in their operation instructions. A 5S walk-thru will be incorporated into audit results, etc.
They are the experts, the system is just absorbed into the Business Operating System (if you refrain from using the 'Q' word it may make it easier!).
