Re: ISO 9001 Implementation and Certification - Some advice

Wow that was quick,

So what is this webinar you speak of, how do I find one. Also is there any other standards that a design house might want to abide by. I figure if we are going to get a consultant on something we might as well go the full Nelson and get every standard necessary to get somewhere productive with these big firms we are talking to.

As for the gap analysis. Why is it not advisable to do your own Gap Analysis. I have seen a few Gap Analysis documents online, but I was wondering moreso if there was something this forum could help me with.

No problem about doing your own, provided that you understand the Standard and its requirement, and thus can accurately analyse the gaps.

If you don't have the experience and the knowledge to do it, I'd liken it to something a little akin to doing your own medical diagnosing.

We're happy to help, hence the response!

Really, you answered your own question, regarding the gap. A bit like the cost of an expensive car...if you have to ask, you can't afford it! If you don't what a gap analysis is, where to find the 'tools' etc....you can finish the sentence!

This is going to be more than you can handle at one time. Don't get too excited about doing much more than ISO 9001 at the moment and use the time to research what else might be helpful. This is not an 'awards show' like the Oscars...

Whoa, slow down Mecca. You are getting good advice, but you are racing ahead and ignoring the advice. You don't want to "get every standard necessary to get somewhere productive" all at the beginning.

Your boss said there is a prospective client who might give you work if you implement ISO 9001. Start there.

1. Get the standard - ISO 9001, and it would be good to get the companion standard - ISO 9004, because it explains things better. Read it, learn it, absorb it.

2. Then, do far more research here at Elsmar. This site is packed with massive amounts of advice and discussions from many very experienced practitioners in this field.

3. Then, you might be ready to do a gap analysis. Right now, it is probably too soon. You don't know enough to do an effective gap analysis. And, there are undoubtedly a lot of gaps. It would be like have a building inspector inspect your building project before you built anything. It would be a long punch list of gaps.

A good consultant can help you get a quicker start, and in the long run, will save you more time than he will cost. On the other hand, you can do this yourself, many have, if you study well. And, it sound slike you currently have more time than budget, so that might be a foregone conclusion.

Best wishes and best of luck, friend...

Also don't oversimplify the Standard!

That's definitely not one of Randy's mottoes. Nor mine.

Depends of course what you mean by 'over' simplify. I always advocate simplifying things - including the Standard - whenever and wherever one can without (of course) losing or compromising things that ought not to be lost or compromised.

That's not over-simplifying to me it's making them practical and accessible. And Randy, based on my long experience of reading his posts, is a master at it. I think it takes considerable knowledge, skill and experience to understand how, when and where to simplify a Standard and do it effectively. But then, I believe over-complicating a Standard is detrimental and counter-productive.

I only meant that QMS Certification should retain some weight and value.

My $.02 is that if you are a succesfull company, you are probably already "following" the standard.

What is most important is to WRITE WHAT YOU ARE ALREADY DOING, keep good records and hire a consultant for atleast one day that can tell you what you will need.

of course, that is optional but for (consultants that i know, myself included charge) $400, you will save a week of dead ends.

I will be happy to help if you want to e-mail me directly.

also, find a concise QSM (quality system manual) and use it as a reference, at the top click the green box that says "post attachments list" and you will find examples.

AGAIN, WRITE WHAT YOU ARE ALREADY DOING.

start small, just the 6 required procedures to start. pay close attention to a design procedure also.

and KEEP RECORDS OF EVERYTHING.

also, an internal audit and management review meeting are required. keep records of customer communication and all quality focused meetings.

IMO a gap anaylsis isn't really effective if you have no manual or procedures in place..........how can you see any gaps if that is all you have?
