So I guess if we have 2 internal auditors neither of us can audit the internal audits we have completed over the past 3 years, is this right? I understand that we can't audit our own work but could I audit the audits the other auditor has completed and vice-versa?

Sure you can-
That is- in first party audits.

In a third party audit, the requirement is that Auditor is unbiased and one can not audit one's work.

Now a hypothetical case:-
In a single man organization, who does the internal audit?

Perhaps we can just ask ourselves: "Are there any situations where you are auditing your own work when you can be objective / impartial?"

Normally we can't but it's not at all impossible either. But as the thread title goes, ISO 9001 doesn't at all permit you to conduct an audit if it involves your own work even if you are prepared to ensure (& prove) impartiality & objectivity of the audit process.

In my opinion, answer to this question must lie somewhere in what differentiates 'one's own work' from that of 'others' (work).

In that case, one should go with what Amanbhai's trainer advised

The response from the trainer was.......... the lab (organization) shall arrange internal auditor from other organizations.

9001;2008 - clause 8.2.2 is flawed and contradicts what it states in Clause 1.2 Application ...intended to be applicable to all organizatons, regardless of type, size and product....

But then again, how many folks from single person owned and operated organizations were and or are involved in TC176?

When the question comes up, explain that you and the other auditor decided to implement a peer review. Perfectly OK.
