I gives one the capacity to challenge the consultant and hey, it's good for the consultant too!

I'm thinking that they might need another consultant! I can't see why you'd say this, since a 'trainer' might be able to train, but have little implementation experience (the QS-9000 Plexus program was based on this) and the consultant may not be a good trainer. It would be more advantageous to find someone who can blend, effectively, both skills...like some of our friends, here!

I was thinking of my own experience. We had a consultant during our first certification, he was very good, but it was my external auditor training, done by an independent training only organisation, that really helped me understand what was expected of a good system.

Tamale, I understand. An accredited course has requirements to be met, whereas the consultant is very much 'free-wheeling'. Did they tell you anything different or was the advice better than the consultant? - there's a big difference!

My consultant was a proponent of «think small» it will grow eventually!

He was totally against canned procedures, he encouraged me to get floor people involved in WI writing witch was the best thing I could have done. Ownership was immediate and we avoided the pitfall of post certification depression.

As for the auditor training, the trainers were from, if I remember correctly, Seatle. They were training in Quebec, the cultural differences made for excellent discussions and exchange of ideas. That fact put us in a context of what an international standard is supposed to accomplish.

At the time I was working for QuebecorWorld, 160 printing plants so I had a lot of experience to choose from.Our plant became a model for the rest. Even though the company does not exist anymore , I am still quite proud of that.

That's the jist of it !
