I am in the process of generating a process flowchart for ISO 9001:2008 certification. We have identified our critical processes as Production, Production Control, Quality, Purchasing, Sales/Engineering and Shipping/Receiving. Does anyone have an example of a process flowchart that ties processes to individual ISO clauses. I appreciate any help that you can furnish.

Re: ISO 9001:2008 ISO clauses and processes flowchart

HI P

Yes this would be very useful, especially when working through the Standard to ensure that all clauses are identified and met on the Flow chart. And again for an Auditor running through the place - I'd say there must be loads of flow charts with these links, and I too would find this interesting, as I too am currently identifying the flow process.

Welcome to the Cove! :bigwave:

Many people use flow charts to document and communicate processes in accordance with requirements of standards. AES Consulting wrote a white paper showing an example: The Scripted Flowchart: Concise and Effective Procedure Writing. The scripts could include which elements are addressed, step by step.

However, I don't feel sure process users would find these elements a value-added piece of information. Certainly they aren't required information, but for the sake of system planning and assessments I would find the effort worthwhile.

I am not affiliated with AES Consulting.

I am not sure how that might help you, typically each process interacts with different requirements of the standard. It is not just a one-for-one relationship. What I recommend is you flow your processes, then use turtle diagrams for both your customer-oriented (core) processes as well as support.

To ensure you've met all of the requirements of the standard, perform a gap analysis against the standard, indicating where in your QMS the various requirments are met.

I usually use an Interaction of Processes Key following the Interaction of Processes Chart.

The Key could look something like this:

Production 7.5, 7.6, 8.3

Production Control 7.1, 7.5

Quality 4.1, 7.4, 7.5, 7.6, 8.3

Purchasing 4.1, 7.4

Sales / Engineering 7.1, 7.2, 7.3

Shipping / Receiving 4.1, 7.4, 7.5, 8.3

And don't forget you need to accommodate the Management Related activities.

Management Related 4.1, 4.2, 5.1, 5.2, 5.3, 5.4, 5.5, 5.6, 6.1, 6.2, 6.3, 6.4, 8.1, 8.2, 8.4, 8.5

P. Mooney,

I see no point in doing this for the benefit of the users of the management system.

If you want an auditor's guide as part of your process-based management system then why not use a spreadsheet to show which procedures contribute to conformity per each clause from the standard?

Hi P. Mooney. I am also in the process of preparing a flowchart to include the process of the company and include the ISO9001:2008 requirements. I was wondering if you ever received a sample? Or if anyone has a sample?
