ISO launches online survey on ISO 14001 and small businesses

ISO has launched an online survey to gather feedback that it will use to increase the value to small and medium-sized enterprises (SME's) of implementing an environmental management system based on its ISO 14001 standard. To encourage the maximum number of participants in the survey, it is available in ten languages: Czech, Danish, Dutch, English, French, German, Japanese, Portuguese, Spanish and Swedish.

Lennart Piper, leader of the ISO group responsible for the survey, explained the background: "Whether a company is large or small, in today's global market-place both its business customers and consumers are increasingly concerned with its environmental performance as well as a competitive price. Investors are also scrutinizing how well companies manage risks - economic, social and environmental. This is why more and more businesses worldwide are turning to ISO 14001. Unfortunately, there is a perception that EMS are too complicated and expensive for small businesses to implement."

"We have therefore developed a short survey to give us a clearer picture of the extent to which small businesses - those with less than 100 employees - are implementing EMS and of their experience. ISO will use the results to make it easier for small businesses to implement and gain benefits from EMS."

ISO Secretary-General Alan Bryden commented: "Small and medium-sized enterprises are by far the most numerous in most economies and thus vital to economic wealth and to environmental health. Therefore, it is important to facilitate their use of environmental management systems. ISO has only just published the revised, improved (broken link removed), but this survey illustrates that improvement is a never-ending cycle."

The online survey (see Web addresses below) takes only 5-10 minutes to complete. SME's are encouraged to take part whether they have implemented ISO 14001, or another specification. It is also open to SME's that have not implemented an EMS and seeks to establish their reasons for not doing so. More than one person from an organization may complete the survey. Consultants, auditors or registrars who have worked with small businesses are also encouraged to take part. The survey does not ask for any confidential information and respondents' identities will remain confidential. No information gathered can be tracked to a specific person or organization and no individual data will be reported.

Initially, the survey will be open to respondents until 8 March 2005 and a report on the results will be available online after 1 May 2005. All participants who completed the survey will also have access to the tabulated data and will be able to conduct their own analyses. The survey is the work of the Strategic SME Group of ISO technical committee (broken link removed), Subcommittee 1, Environmental management systems.

More BS coming

Even though I was the one that posted the previous message, I was confused on why ISO would be interested to know about the deployment of ISO 14001 in SME's - Small and Medium size Enterprises - .

I think I found out today, we have a new Standard - BS 8555 -
BS 8555:2003 Environmental management systems. Guide to the phased implementation of an environmental management system including the use of environmental performance evaluation

Hey, Randy, our BSi connection. Could you please clarify why the heck we need BS 8555 when we have ISO 14001? :bonk:

May I make a guess?

Maybe it has something to do with the competitiveness of the EMS market. Maybe BSI believes that if it can get the SMEs on board with a limited EMS, then, when they are ready for ISO 14001 registration BSI will have the advantage as they will already have a relationship with the company.

Seems like a lot of effort though for such a silly scenario as I have outlined.

Anything else that I can think of makes even less sense.

Hey Randy,

In other threads you (rightfully) brag about the fact that you have an inside track with the BSi folks. Could you please let us know why BS 8555 has been developed and how it interacts with ISO 14001?

Let me ask around...this one will probably need to go to one of the UK based folks.

B/T/W Sid, I do have kind of an inside track to the BSI folks seeing that my paycheck and business cards have BSI plastered all over them and I'm one of the folks

Here's what I found out about BS 8555:2003..No advertising intended, just the facts.

BS 8555:2003 Environmental management systems. Guide to the phased implementation of an environmental management system including the use of environmental performance evaluation

Building on BS EN ISO 14001 and the EU Eco-Management and Audit Scheme (EMAS), this British Standard provides guidance to all organizations on the phased implementation, maintenance and improvement of a formal Environmental Management System (EMS).

BS 8555 makes particular reference to small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) but is applicable to any organization, regardless of the nature of the business activity undertaken, location or level of maturity.

It outlines an implementation process that can be undertaken in up to six separate phases and allows for phased acknowledgement of progress towards full EMS implementation.

It also includes advice on the integration and use of environmental performance evaluation techniques during the implementation process and the co-ordination of an EMS with other management systems.

BS 8555 will help all organizations improve their environmental performance and their supply chain relationships with the following guidance:

Describes a six-phase incremental approach to implementing an EMS using environmental performance evaluation
Provides information to organizations on environmental performance management and the use of environmental performance indicators
Helps organizations satisfy the environmental criteria increasingly being set in contract tenders by new and existing major clients
Can be used by organizations who may wish to self-declare or seek voluntary phased recognition throughout the implementation process.
Beyond this, those using the standard can:

Choose to engage in environmental performance management to the level commensurate with the risks they face
Identify and maximize the areas of greatest potential return on investment
Demonstrate to interested parties that progress is being made towards the target level of environmental management

Too much BS?

Belated thanks, Randy.

Following the beaten path, ISO 14005 is being developed along the lines of BS 8555.

To make things easier and faster, ISO should move from Geneva to London.

Except that using ISO's conception of "easier and faster," they would probably wind up in a cave in Siberia:biglaugh:.
