Hi All!

I was told that ISO was finally developing an International standard for Occupation Health and safety management in order to replace OSHAS 18001.
The number was something like 56000 and it was at stage of FDIS.
I also can’t find anything about this subject at ISO site.:(
Is this true?

Thanks
AV

Conspiracy theory

No. ISO does not make decisions like that in the dark of the night. There is a whole process to justify the need for a standard and gather support from stakeholders. Furthermore, for a document like that to reach the FDIS status totally unknown by the management system community would be a world class conspiracy.

Re: New ISO Standard fot Occupation Health ans safety management?

Thanks Sidney!

I also though so.
This happened today at my master’s degree on safety. One teacher spoke about this matter.
In the classroom I told her that probably this wasn’t correct, but told him I’ll try to search some more on this subject.
As I had no internet in the class room, I only could search when I arrived home, and as I could find anything related, I decided to ask...

Antonio, does your teacher have "gender definition issues"?

6.1 Has ISO published standards on Occupational Health & Safety (OH&S) management systems under the designation ISO 18000?
No ISO standards currently exist on OH&S management systems under the designation of ISO 18000, or under any other designation. In January 1997, ISO's Technical Management Board (TMB) shelved the possibility of ISO developing OH&S standards along the lines of ISO 9000. At that time, the TMB noted that the outcome of the international workshop on OH&S management system standardization held by ISO on 5-6 September 1996 in Geneva indicated that there was little support from the main stakeholders for ISO to develop standards in this field. The question was revisited with the same outcome some three years later - see ISO's Press Release of 22 June 2000.
However, such standards have been developed at national level (e.g. in Australia, the United Kingdom, ... ).

In fact the teacher is a she not a he. She was just replacing the real teacher who is a “guru” of standards!
I was just trying to make some “camouflage”..., you know the world it too small and elsmar is too large, you never know... (and also I’m using my real name here...)

I know about safety management standards made by other countries. I already have the new Canadian CSA Z1000-06 “Occupational Health and Safety Management” (march 2006), which I recommend.
Anyway, thanks a lot!

Why are you recommending it over the ANSI Z10?

Randy,

CSA Z1000-06 in page 41 has annex C – Correspondence between CSA Z1000-06 and other related standards and guidelines.
As this Canadian standard is newer than American ANSI/AIAH Z10-2005, this one is included in this “Correspondence”.
In fact these standards are somehow similar, although I prefer the way Z1000-06 is done. In this standard you can find Annex A – Guidance on the use of CSA Z1000-06, which is a very well explained part of the document. This annex has also for each requirement some interesting questions for assessment.
On the other hand, Z10-2005 has an interesting Appendix E about “Risk Assessment”, and also Appendix I Audit, that contains a table of “Objective Evidence” that can provide a good framework.
It seems to me that the Canadian standard was done to be used easily for certification that OHSAS 18001 and ANSI/AIAH Z10-2005.
Let’s see what the future will tell about this my humble opinion.

Best Regards:bigwave:

The Canadian Standard was just released later that the US standard. The intent was to follow the US release as I understood it.

The Canadians were a great deal ahead of the USA regarding OH&S in the correspondance between Provencial/Territorial OH&S legislation and existing management systems like OHSAS 18001.

Don't believe that Canada's is newer, I had my hands on a copy of Z-1000before the USA Z10 was released.
