We also used the Balanced Scorecard approach, so that we only reported on metrics that top management found to be fundamental to the success of the organization, or key to its performance. In other words, these metrics had direct alignment to our organization's strategic objectives - not just Quality, not just Environment, not just Finance. You can use the 'Search' function here in the Cove for more information the Balanced Scorecard if this is of interest to you.
We also showed the data of the metrics in the following way:
- Year-end results from 2 years ago
- Year-end results from 1 year ago
- Month-to-month results of current year
- Year-to-date results of current year
- Goal of current year
- Colour-coding to show if current years goals are being met
- Organizational benchmark results
- Statistical recommendations for next year's performance (i.e., 2013 control limits for a routine metric would be the average of the past 18 months +/- 1.5 standard deviations)
These metrics went above and beyond ISO, but it helped to strengthen our business system.
