The information provided did not indicate any issue withe competence of the manufacturer or their ability to calibrate their own equipment. All this discussion of the 'what ifs' is a waste of time. As I said, in MY OPINION, the case cited should have fallen within the scope of using a qualified manufacturer. The auditor was being way too picky IN MY OPINION.

I agree - the fact is, we are referring to TS 16949 and the automotive group (AIAG) that originated it expects the clauses to be adhered to. 7.6.3 is not vague. It gives the option of customer approval for not using an accredited lab to calibrate your equipment.

But I am especially happy to see mention of stepping back and looking at the calibration plan. Not everything needs to be calibrated by an accredited lab. Start with your control plan to determine what pieces fall under that requirement and why. Usage rates and their effect on the equipment (wear) and history of calibration results are factors of a calibration plan I would expect to see while auditing. A calibration process is defined and implemented to conduct these activities.
