ISO9001:2000 vs. TS16949 vs. AS9100 - Differences and General Questions

P

PVieira

My company is very involved in Automotive components and several of our customers have required us to establish a QMS. We were originally Certified to QS9000 and Ultimately upgraded our Certification to ISO9001:2000 ISO/TS16949.

Our management is now considering getting onto the Aerospace supply chain and has asked us (The QMS committee) what exactly it would take to make us a favorable consideration for this new business.

So I guess I have just a few questions:

1. After having read a lot of information I'm confused with a 50/50 view so tell me is AS9100 required to compete as an Aerospace supplier if not dealing tier 1 or 2?

2. How much more involved is acquiring and maintaining AS9100 compared to ISO9001:2000 TS16949?

3. Can certification actually be conjoined with our ISO registration as all three elements ISO / TS16949 / and AS9100?

4. And finally has anyone actually completed this endeavor? And if so what advise or assistance could you offer to simplify this process for us?

Hoping for Good Answers,
PVieira

Hello...
Unless customers are mandating you register to AS9100 then it may not be necessary. Most aerospace customers I have dealt with are still allowing AS9100 or ISO9001:2000 even after the December 2008 industry deadline. To determine the differences, complete a gap analysis. Most of the additional requirements for AS9100 deal with design.

Re: ISO9001:2000 vs. TS16949 vs. AS9100

Get a copy of the AS9100B standard and study the differences. It uses ISO9001:2000 as the parent standard, as does TS16949 so you should be able to understand it. In AS9100B, the additional requirements from ISO9001:2000 are bolded and italicized.

Some customers in Aerospace will insist on AS registration. Some will be happy with what you have, and some will require that you address the AS differences even if you don't seek AS registration. You need to talk with some of the potential customers and find out what they expect.

They are all three basically the same document with the only differences being those specified by either the aerospace or automotive industry.

As far as I know there is no simple table with all three standards. We don't have one and we perform audits on all three as well as a few others.

Just match up the common stuff and address the specific stuff as that and there you have it...kinda like rocket science....pointy end to the front, fire to the rear, noise and smoke all around.

Hello Pedro,

Welcome to The Cove Forums! :bigwave: :bigwave:

Look at ISO/TS 16949:2002 Clause 7.3.6.3 Product approval process.

This clause does not use the term "PPAP." But if you read carefully, you understand what this requirement is about....
