Frankly, if you aren't already prepared to answer ANY question about how you may help the employer reach its goals concerning IT and its relationship with FDA, you aren't ready to go into this interview.

What were the job qualifications outlined when you applied for the job? Apparently whatever you said in your cover letter and resume prompted the employer to set up an interview. If you can't back up and expand upon what was contained in your resume and cover letter, why not? I'm pretty sure the primary purpose of the interview will be to see whether your personality will fit with the employer's staff, not about your basic skills.

I know a lot about FDA and food manufacturers, but I know a whole lot more about being an employer. The interview will focus primarily on whether you seem as bright in person as your resume indicates.

Let's talk about "phone interviews." They are important!

The primary purpose of a phone interview from the employer's point of view is a low cost screening device to determine if the candidate's verbal skill equals his written skill. If the candidate gets past the phone interview, there probably will be an in person interview somewhere down the road. The secondary purpose will be to get a sense of the candidate's affability and might include some "hypothetical what if" questions to get a sense of the candidate's speed and focus in dealing with new situations.

From the candidate's point of view, it is important to remember the phone interview is an important first step. Rambling with long winded off topic stuff is as damaging as monosyllabic responses to questions. You will only get one chance to make a good first impression.

I counsel folks facing a phone interview to assure they will be in a quiet place free from distraction - not on a cell phone while driving in heavy traffic. It doesn't hurt to have copies of anything written you've sent to the employer handy for reference - the last thing you want to do is contradict what he has written before him. For some folks I've counseled, it helps to have a mirror on the desk or table so you can check from time to time to make sure you are smiling. The smile really does come through in one's voice.

Watch for verbal miscues like continually using "crutch phrases" such as "you know" or "actually" or "at the end of the day." I had one candidate run through a practice session with me who used the phrase "at the end of the day" 22 times in a twenty minute practice (we counted them as we played back the audio tape.) Speaking of taping - it's not a bad idea to tape at least your half of the conversation so you can play it back for review. It may be illegal to tape the interviewer without express permission. Many interviewers do tape the sessions, so it is not out of line for you to ask if he is taping. If the answer is yes (some aren't forthcoming and tape illegally), ask if he'll send you a copy of the tape!

Take notes on what is asked and what you answer - ditto for what you ask and what he answers!
