I did accidently name Johnson Gage. They are two different companies. Your phone call must be the reason that I have had two calls this morning with Stan Johnson, President of Johnson Thread View Systems. He is planning to visit with me and my technicians next to work out the problems. I want to take this moment to distinguish that The Johnson Gage Company provides very reliable thread measuring devices. The Johnson Thread View Company is trying to correct and educate my technicians in this new technology. I have been told that the Thread View System Company is a spin-off of the Johnson Gage Company. I'll post a new thread based on information from our meeting with Stan Johnson.

Thanks,
TIMMYS

A little thread gage trivia for you: Johnson is a very distinguished name in the thread inspection business. While working at Pratt & Whitney, Grandpa Johnson designed the Adjustable Thread Ring Gage we all know so well. Then, while still at Pratt & Whitney, he designed the tri-roll thread comparator. That first design is now made by Glastonbury Southern Gage. After leaving Pratt & Whitney Grandpa Johnson redesigned the tri-roll thread comparator which is now being sold by The Johnson Gage Company. Johnson Thread-View Systems is owned/managed by one of his grandsons, Stanley. Another grandson, his brother Lowell, runs The Johnson Gage Company.

Thank you for the information. I did know about Lowell and Stan. I have used variable thread gages from the Johnson Gage Company since 1978. I refer all Engineers at my company to utilize the Johnson Gages. As far as I am concerned the Johnson Gage Company makes a first class thread measurement system. They have made customized variable thread gages for me in the past and I am delighted with their robust design and reliable measurements. Nuff said on that subject.

Thanks again for all you input,
TIMMYS

Maybe I should start a “thread” on general thread measurement but for now I’ll add my comments to this one. Thread measurement (especially thread pitch diameter measurement) is often made out to be much more complicated than it actually is.
A M6 or UNC1/4” external thread has a pitch diameter tolerance of about 0.1 mm (0.004”) and the internal pitch diameter tolerance of the matching thread is usually approximately 30% greater.
I have accessories that can measure pitch diameter on ALL thread types and sizes – internal from 6 mm / ¼”. With 4 sets, pitch diameters from 0.5 mm (48 TPI) to 8 mm (3 TPI) on all threads with a flank angle of between 50O and 80O can be measured.
I also have a (single) thread measurement insert (pair) that can measure ALL tapered threads (external or internal) from ¼” and up. It can be used for both NPT and Whitworth.

What I have is intended for component measurement and not gauge calibration.
The latest I have is a “standard” 6” (150 mm) digital caliper (with carbide jaws) that measures with the accuracy of a micrometer. The display is in 0.001 mm (0.00004”). As a caliper it can measure externally, internally and depth.
I also have invented a pressure device for digital calipers that ensures uniform measurement pressure – which is usually a necessity for accurate caliper measurement.

Y’all have a great day J
