Keeping Horses in the City

Horses

Looking for some help and I thought that this may be worth a shot. We are currently trying to get a zoning ordinance passed called RE. This would allow owners of 3 acres of land or more to keep a set number of horses per acre. Has anyone here went thru the same or have any info that may aid in my quest and now more of a fight. Any tips would be appreciated.

Man, here I got all excited when I saw a thread named 'Horses' only to find out it's a legal question. :vfunny:

Wish I could help, but I don't know anything about zoning ordinances.

so do you have some sort of covenent in your "subdivision"? Usually if you are outside city limits (even if you are within city jurisdiction) there are usually already guidelines set for "livestock"????

Never had to rezone, so I can't help you out much, but good luck, the outside of a horse is good for the inside of a man!

Back in the 1960's the town I lived in - Fort Thomas, Kentucky - outlawed 'farm animals' and horses were included in the definition. My family and one other were finally 'temporarily' exempted because we had horses for years but I remember my father went through a lot - including harrassing city inspectors and a court session - to get that exemption.

Three acres isn't very large. They'll probably cite health issues on a plot that small.

Good luck!

I live in a city where you're not allowed to build a house with less than an acre. Many of my neighbors have 1-3 horses on their acre lots. I have cats. I'm not aware of any health issues now, but I may develop hairballs tomorrow. :vfunny:

Your city ordinance (inside city limits????) is one acre lots? Wow, that would be nice. I always buy outside the city limits cuz I don't want to reach out the bathroom window and shake hands with my neighbor! When I was raising horses, we always figured one horse per acre, with a 3 acre minimum, i.e. you could have one - three horses on that first three acres.

The problem with raising horses is that they are really hard to plant! The good thing is you don't get hairballs! lol

This is a start, would you mind getting me the name and number of the city office and the planning director.

Here's a linky to the city website that lists the city office number and email of the city planner: West Haven City

Horses? Pshawwww. We've got some folks that keep cows in the city limits. We won't even consider the odd goat here or there.

I just had a herd (15-20) of geese walk thru my front yard that live about 2 doors down. They were walking to the pond next door.
