Slightly off topic, I can't agree with this totally Jane although it does relate to how different companies interpret things differently.

If you target for a low number of near misses you will find that quite often some will not be reported, so you are losing an opportunity to put preventive action in place.

We actively encourage near misses as it makes us pro-active rather than re-active and are a little concerned if there is a low number.

Wasn't it? Nobody would encourage the occurrence of near misses, unless they are of this kind....

Like the photo, though. Is there an equivalent - 'near man'? close gent? - for those of us of a different gender?

As per mine auditing experience quality objectives are on a broad-level base while KPI's are pretty strict and usually numeric in nature. Most of the companies try keeping financial and customer satisfaction related objectives as quality objectives for the company.

The SOP's (standard operating procedures) or the QSP (quality system procedure) mostly have KPI's which show a certain limit and which need be measured on a fixed time basis.

Conclusion : Quality objectives are broad terms used by companies for which they are aiming for,while KPI's are basically measures used to check if our SOP's are working properly or not.

As your company's definition, that's fine. But another company may use the terms differently. There are no universal, standard and commonly agreed meanings.
