See the linked post for labeling best practices. This was developed by Ford Motor Company. I have implemented many of these and they do work.

Just a comment on one of the concerns expressed regarding color-blindness. This was a concern expressed by several people at a prior company who were color blind. Don't lose sight of the fact that color coding definitely helps those who are not color blind. It just means that you have to have additional aids for those who are color blind.

The best labeling practice I've seen lately is (very surprisingly) Home Depot hardware and trim.

Put a picture of the part right on the label...

right hand vs. left hand...pull a part and compare to the picture.
Ogee molding vs fluted trim...just look at the picture on the label.
Color blind, doesn't matter...as long as you aren't shape-blind.
Hex-head, button head, phillips, knurled cap screw...it's all right on the label.

(Now if they would restock a little better...)

That is what I did for the color blind people, put a picture of the part on the color coded sheet. Due to automotive labeling standards, we could not put it on the actual label.

We had a "sign" on the boxes with a picture. The "label" was different...though they were on the same physical sheet...
We didn't get push-back for it.
Words have meanings...but you can use them to advantage ;)

Hi MikeSeymourAtl,
don't be unduly discouraged from investigating an Optical Verification method(s) or an AOI as some call it Automated Optical Inspection (note there are many degrees and varieties inder this umbrella term), the cost of high quality resolution cameras & video hardware have really come down...software may be a bit of an issue, yet the expense may be able to be borne across multiple uses or work stations? hope this helps

We are still having labeling problems as well. and our system is split - barcode labeling for the product we produce in our facility - but the pass through business side does not have a barcode system and will not as it is controlled by another branch. The labeling information you mentioned above would be greatly appreciated.
