Labeling measurement and test equipment

Like many calibration companies out there, our service provider uses small labels to record the cal/due date.
we have some people who will print a sticker and put it on the instrument duplicating the calibration information so it is easier to read, any thoughts on this? I thought the original sticker was all that was allowed.

Thanks

The most basic requirement regarding calibration labels is found in ISO 9001, whch says the equipment shall "have identification in order to determine its calibration status".
Most interpret that to be a calibration label.

As long as you have a calibration label on the instrument that defines its calibration status you are adequate. If you are reporting to some other standard (AS9100, ISO 13485, TS 16949, etc.) you will need to meet their specific requirements for labeling. But there is nothing preventing you from placing your own label on equipment, lots of companies do.

Some of our tools cannot accomodate the typical tool sticker. Grease from tasks or high use may wear them off easily. Some of our tools have metal tags with the tool number punched into it. The tool control software we use has a scanned copy of the paperwork linked to that tool number. Though they are not calibrated tools they are tools we have to do regular GSE maintenance on.

We have used our own calibration stickers or engravings in the past without issue because we can trace it to the original certification paperwork. Our TC system won't allow anyone to check out a tool if it is expired and our TC technician checks tools well in advanced so nothing out of cal is on the floor.

I think the goal is tracability to the certificate and control not using a particular sticker.

My 2 cents anyways.

I have the similar issue and I place a tiny sticker with ID # and due date. Auditors do not have any issue but be aware he/she most likely will ask for calibration certification if the sticker(s) look different comparing to normal stickers.

Thank you all for the responses. I may have them at least initial/date their sticker so there is traceability in the event of incorrect information is recorded.
