Laid off? Downsized? What did you learn?

Not laid off. My Hours were cut from 40 to 36. There is talk that the hours may get cut to 32.

I chose Fridays to be my short days but I stay and work nearly a full day less 30 mins. I can't leave, my work is too important and I am the only one running the ISO show. I am the dept. I am one person for 6 sites and what used to be 650-700 people. I think we're in the 400-500 range now.

There is one Friday where I have scheduled a normal/check-up DR appt. Might as well do it now so I don't have to miss work later.

What really bugs me, is that I was told everyone's hours will be cut. BS. Some people who don't have enough work for 40, got to keep their 40. WTF? Why are my hours cut so some people who sit on their duff, socialize, etc. can keep their 40?

Just venting....thanks

So what did I learn? I learned that I am valuable to them(but not as valuable as some who got to keep their 40)......I was told that there is no way they would lay me off. The only way that I would lose my job is if the whole company went in the tank.

Yep - we see this a lot. The sorry fact is most organizations do not have top managers who agree with Deming's System of Profound Knowledge. When the top brass keep secrets, they don't realize the resentment it creates in the troops left out of the loop.

When times get good again, those same managers complain there is no "loyalty" among the employees (who leave in droves when jobs get plentiful elsewhere), conveniently forgetting their abuse and misuse of the employees.

Wes,

They cannot agree, because they have absolutely no clue of what it is...

As long as Dr. Deming's teachings are not included in the various curriculae at institutions of higher learning, we're up sh*t creek..;)

I've actually had top managers tell me (after I present a seminar on QMS, including SoPK), "That's crazy! Why would I let my employees know what my business is all about? They work for me and they damn well better do what they're told. They're just workers!"

Wth that kind of closed mind, no amount of education can penetrate. Heck! Some of these guys would use a whip on the employees if they thought they could get away with it. Just last year, we had a case here in the Chicago area where a medical doctor and his wife (also a doctor) were indicted for keeping several young women (imported from the home country of the doctors as "au pairs") in actual slavery, seizing their passports and locking them in the basement when both doctors would be away from the house. The wife was additionally charged with aggravated battery for beating the women with a stick because "they were lazy!"

Then there are the people who are really hurt by bad managers. A friend stayed at a former employer after many of us were laid off. After 3 more layoffs, they offered a voluntary layoff and if she took it she would have gotten 43 weeks severance. Everyone was told that if enough people did not take the voluntary there would be more layoffs with less severance. Her boss told her she was protected and would not lose her job. Guess what. Four weeks ago she was laid off with 13 weeks severance.

Gotta love these bosses..:sarcasm:

During times of layoffs, downsizing, etc. I have learned to trust nothing that I am told from "higher-ups" regarding my job "security". Make the decision based on what is best for you...not the company.

Interesting that you learned that lesson because it is the same message I also learned. Unfortunately, she is a trusting sort and thought I was too cynical when I warned her not to trust her boss. :(

All who have posted about the need for education in quality, esp. statistical control are dead right. When executives get it, they protect such programs. When they don't, those are the first to go.

I was taught it in 2 different ways.

1. During my schooling one of my professors told us to treat our careers like a business. You are the product and you need to ensure that the product is always presented in the best light. Many times "waiting for the axe" tends to tarnish the product as your emotional side tends to shine through ubconsciously (I was taught this after the early 90's recession).

2. Personal experience - wife was let go - offered 6 month position with future potential - was eventually let go anyway. Required lawyer - but got what was due. The 6 month position was accepted due to her just coming off mat leave so the decision it was made with personal needs ahead of the company.

Nobody is irreplaceable; however, you can make yourself valuable enough that under most circumstances they would not consider letting you go (obviously, locking the doors is one exception).
