Level 3 PPAP for Customer - We are outsourcing the processing

We are having some material processed for our customer. They require a level 3 PPAP from us. Since we are not doing the actual processing, can we supply the necessary documents for the PPAP?

I believe that you would be required to get the required information/samples from your supplier? How about checking with your customer and asking how they would have this situation covered?

Hello there,

the way that i understand your question, is that you purchase a material or a component which you sell one on one to your customer without adding any value to it.

In this case, you need to request a level 3 PPAP from your supplier, and after approval, add any documentation that may be applicable such as a process flow IMDS entry data, AAR that has been obtained etc, and generate a new PSW frontsheet with the necessary data included. This bundle you can then provide to your customer for review / approval.

What happens if our customer is not aware that we are outsourcing the job? How does this make a difference in furnishing the paperwork?

Do you know the process? Can you do a GR&R on the gages used to verify the part?
Can you provide the process flow and corrective action?

Also has the customer approved the supplier before you used them? My company has a few suppliers approved by our customer, but the rejects from those suppliers actually count on us. Even tho they are the customers approved suppliers. Our returns are thru the roof from them to, we are pulling work from them.

Am I right in thinking that you are a Tier 1 supplier looking to outsource a product or process without the knowledge of your customer?
If that is the case, you are asking for trouble!
Outsourcing is a process change and customers will usually require a formal process change request notification. This will require their approval prior to the implementation of the change. Be warned, this process can take weeks/months!
Discuss the notification and PPAP documentation requirements with your customer’s quality contact/STA engineer, they will usually be happy to advise.
Notification of the customer is a requirement of TS16949 and failure to do so could result in a major non compliance. It could also result in serious customer dissatisfaction and potential loss of future business.

If your customer doesn't know, than you have a second problem already as normally any change of production location should be reported to your customer and a PPAP resubmission is required.

I would try to fix this by requesting a change of production location now, using the customers format (SREA for Ford, others may have other templates) and get approval so you can submit the PPAP as i indicated in my previous post.

The more risky methode is to just submit with the suppliers documentation incorporated and hope nobody notices or raises any questions.
