Level II Procedure for 7.5.1 Control of Production & Service clarification

Hello,

I was wondering if I could get some clarification...

The scope of our product realization process includes Production (Fabrication/Assembly) + Installation + Service. We manufacture, install and service capital equipment.

As a level II procedure, what would I need to describe to meet the requirement for Control of Production?

I am struggling with how to articulate what controls are in place for the Fabrication/Assembly processes. Since each machine that we build is different, many of the fabrication/assly processes wont be exactly the same the next time we build a machine.

We can general work instructions that describe how to conduct fabrication in a generic sense, but im not sure this serves as a control?

Any thoughts?

Welcome to the Cove !

One of the outcomes of your design and development process (I´m assuming it´s one of your core processes by your description), should be an assembly type drawing/blue print... as you state that each machine is different, a start could be the drawings... along with checks done by Inspectors (or by the machine operators themselves).

Re: 7.5.1 control of production & service clarification

thank you for the welcome and the reply,

i like the idea of using eng. drawings with work-instructions as a control - but if each design is, at least in part unique/different, i guess that means we need unique "one-off" inspection sheets that pertain directly to that design as oppossed to generic inspection sheets - im assuming i will need to address this once i start developing the control of design process :)

You have to start with design and development process and base your specific instructions as one of the outputs of the process.

One of my clients is in the business of manufacturing transformers. For each order they develop a design. One of the outputs of the design process is a Job Instruction which detailed the technical specifications while working on the components for eg say winding, then, the number of turns, left and right margins etc. This job instruction is in addition to other technical specifications such as those of raw material etc.

The job is then carried out as per a general work instruction for that activity, in above example would be WI for winding (which, as I gather from your description, in your case would be an output of the design activity).

The flow of process of entire manufacturing (through various sections) is described in a procedure.

Not at all. We are a job shop full of skilled tradesmen - we use the engineering drawings along with the router for our work instructions for most products and record our inspection results on an "inspection copy" of the drawing.

For more complex products or where specific inspection reporting formats are required (like for our aerospace and military products) we create a specific report for each part but it's just a matter of ballooning the drawing and typing the specs into our inspection report template.

Building capitol equipment is obviously much different than building ballscrews (like we do) but you get the drift - do what makes sense for your organization and the skill level of your employees.
