Light Measurement Help - Work Instruction for Inspection of Powder Coated Surfaces

Hello, I have just been handed a work instruction for inspection of powder coated surfaces. One of the Inspection Requirements is to view the object with fluorescent illumination level of 300 lumens.
I have no experience with this type of measurement, how is the best way to determine the lumens of the inspection area, or surface being inspected?

Thank you,
Phil

Re: Light Measurement Help

My past experience with powder coated materials never mentioned what you are asking. We conducted life tests in humidity chambers. Visually inspected for flaws such as pin-holes, roughness, flatness and foriegn specks that may have dropped into the powder tanks.

Re: Light Measurement Help - Work Instruction for Inspection of Powder Coated Surface

There is something odd about the requirements for lighting.

Lumens are a measure of the total light emited by a source (or "luminous flux"). A typical 40W fluorescent light is around 3000 lm (lumens). A typical 100 W incandescent is around 1700 lm.

But this definition doesn't depend on distance. A single 40 W fluorescent provides 10x more lumens than you need - no matter how far away the light or how big the room!

Presumably the measure you want for illumination level (or "illuminance") is the lux = lumens/m^2. From a few rough calculations, a single, bare 40 W fluorescent about 3 ft above the surface would be about 300 lux. If the light has a reflector behind it, it could be a little farther.

Typical levels are ~500 lx for offices & retail stores, 100,000 lx for direct sunlight, 0.1 lx for a full moon at night

Of course, the simpel answer is to just by a light meter calibrated in lux and call it good. ;-)
