Thanks Sidney. I wonder why this hasn't taken off at all in the U.S. or rather why it is more prevalent in some countries than others?

Speaking in general terms, the USA is a nation of laws and within its laws (Federal, State, local., etc) are those specifically set forth and aside to cover workers. The USA also has government agencies that provide oversight on worker issues (The USA is not alone in this of course).
The ILO, under the auspices of the UN, has formulated generic guidelines covering "workers", their basic rights and employers and their basic obligations towards workers on a global basis. In the USA (and some other countries like Canada) the meeting of internal laws regarding workers could be prima facie evidence of meeting SA8000.
Unless there is profit in it and/or it becomes a mandate, don't expect US companies to jump through their fannies with this one.
