Hello, I hope someone can answer this for me. We have a portable ladder that is perfectly good but the load rating and manufactures information is missing from the ladder. I can't even find the Manufactures name. What can we do? I certainly don't want to throw away a perfectly good ladder just because it doesn't have the load information. We are haveing our OHSAS 18001 certification audit in May.

Any help would be appreciated.

Well, I live in Western Canada. We have to abide by both the OHS standard as well as WorkSafe BC. They both stipulate that a manufactured portable ladder must be marked for the grade of material used to construct the ladder and the use for which the ladder is constructed.

If the mark is not present or is illegible, the ladder must be removed from use.

I realize you're in the U.S., but in my experience, the OHS standards are closely aligned. Are you also required to abide by local worker's compensation guidelines?

I picked up an extension ladder from a neighbor that is moving. It was missing the rope that makes it easier to extend. The labels were in pretty rough shape, but the manufactures name could be found. The rope was overpriced ($18.00), so I picked up some rope at the local hardware store.

While on site though I noticed that a full set of labels was available.

You might try searching the internet and seeing if you can find your ladder and see what labels are available. You might get lucky and identify your ladder.

Otherwise, you probably should get it out of the workplace. If it seems servicable, you might invite a worthy employee to take it home.

Hello Sabeard !

Many fall accidents occur with ladders. Ladders are not right equipments to work safely at height (it's best to use it only to access a safer working surface). To improve the prevention of height working phases it's better to think about developing use of individual platforms (manually dismantlable and transportable or rollable) or motorized elevating working platforms for personnel, that are more suitable than simple ladders.

But even using such equipments it is important to not lose load rating, manufacturing information or any other evidence of compliance or legal periodic audit...

Bye.
