When I had my own calibration business, I had a customer that had a huge sign that read something like "We're not striving to be the biggest....Just the best". Every time their instruments were due, I had to pick up a check (they were always 90-120 days past due)... and I saw that sign. They had me to some work, then three days later they folded shop, leaving me hanging on about $2000.00 (for my small operation, that was a lot of money). Whether it is right or not, everytime I see a banner hanging up with some catchphrase, I become very cynical. Anything bad/negative that happens can get transferred to that sign!
Just brainstorming: Instead of attaching a philosophy or slogan, what about attaching a metric? Cost of failure, % defective, % market share, or something like that. Do you have a written customer complaint that could be attached? What is the % percent in sales of the product to the organization?
It is really insightful to want to kick off a new approach/ fresh perspective to get people's attention. However, it needs to be in a language (and relevant) so that people participate, and don't dismiss it as trivial.
