Lost gages and controlled instruments

A recent ISO audit revealed a repeating problem here. A gage due for calibration cannot be found, months later it re-appears now way past the original due date. I'm looking for several options of fixing this problem here.

Thanks
Ken

Queries

Are these Company owned gages or Employee owned?

How do you currently control Company owned Gaging? (check out and return etc.)

James,

This refers to both company and employess gages. AT the moment we label each gage with due dates and I keep a database of all gages, but all the working gages are kept on the shop floor...micrometers, indicators, electronic test equipment. Some of these gages get taken on outsdie work jobs, some are taken to other departments, some end up in an employees toolbox, then they will sometime re-appear just in time for the auditor to find them.

Welcomne to the Cove. I have the same problem here. Using the software I have I generate a due list each month, week or when necessary. If I can not find a tool that is due for calibration I report is as lost in my software as of the due date. If it is found at a later date I make note of the date it is found and calibrate it. I have been throught several UL audits and this procedure has satisfied the auditor. If I can be of further assistance let me know.

Hi Ken, Welcome to the Cove.

The number one control for the problem you state is training of employees. All employees have to be trained not to use a gage until the state of calibration is known. In our company this usually consists of looking at the calibration sticker to confirm the date due. If the date on the sticker is good and all other things look to be in order (gage zeros out ok, no obvious damage etc) then they use the gage. When a gage is found to be outside the sticker date (or without a sticker) the gage cannot be used and is sent to quality for calibration. If employees don't verify calibration status, your calibration system will, sooner or later, fail.
