Just been given one that I think is made up. "polyvalance standards"!!

Polyvalence is a term from chemistry and this was applied to suppliers audit and process audit situations.

You got any? Or you know if my example actually means something important?

Re: Made up terms/words!

Checking out your profile and seeing VDA listed, could it have something to do with the chemistry or chemical standards for paint, rust-inhibitors, or other chemical aspects in the automotive industry?

Having worked in the bus manufacturing business once upon a time, I worked with our paint specialist and he was constantly looking to control the specs and standards of our paints and coatings to ensure consistency in customer fleets.

Or maybe the person who used the word is trying to sound like they know what they're talking about.

Re: Made up terms/words!

I looked-up Polyvalence on wikipedia, it came back with the following

Wikipedia reference-linkPolyvalence

"In chemistry, polyvalence or multivalence refers to species that are not restricted to a distinct number of valence bonds. (Species with only one valence are univalent (monovalent)). For example, the Cs+ cation is a univalent or monovalent cation, whereas the Ca2+ cation is a divalent or polyvalent or multivalent cation and the Fe3+ cation is a trivalent or polyvalent or multivalent cation. As a result, examples of polyvalent cations include the Ca2+ cation and the Fe3+ cation.[1]

Specific uses may refer to:
Polysemy
Polyvalent vaccine, a vaccine that can vaccinate a person against more than one strain of a disease
Polyvalent antibody
Antivenoms are classified as polyvalent when they are effective against a range of species, or several different species at the same time"

Re: Made up terms/words!

The Oxford English Dictionary comes back with the following:

polyvalent Pronunciation: /ˌpɒlɪˈveɪl(ə)nt/

Definition of polyvalent

adjective

1 Chemistry having a valency of three or more.

2 Medicine active against several toxins or strains of pathogen: a polyvalent antivenin

3 having many different functions, forms, or facets: the polyvalent character of his thought

Re: Made up terms/words!

One of my majors in college was chemistry, so I was familiar with polyvalent in def. 1. I would have inferred def. 2 if it were used in such context. If OP's quote
Just been given one that I think is made up. "polyvalance standards"!!
is accurate, and the context was about "Standards" for different products, the person cited probably should have used "polyvalent" - an easy error if the writer/speaker did not have English as a primary language and even more likely if the person was not familiar with the term in the sense of def 1

If, however, the context is chemistry, then there very well may be "Standards" regarding chemicals which are polyvalent, hence the term "polyvalance standards."

Re: Made up terms/words!

Polyvalance was a term that was used by a French company that I worked for to describe a tiered training competence matrix.

Re: Made up terms/words!

Well, as I recall, a lot of us just leave early to take advantage of Happy Hour at our local saloon. When I commuted by train, the saloons near the train station had Friday specials - takeout cocktails for the commute. I recall a LOT of commuters fell asleep before their station stop!

Now that you've triggered such memories, I'm going to make myself a Sidney Vianna special - "The Caipirinha is the national cocktail of Brazil. Made with a sugar cane rum known as cachaca, limes and sugar, it's a sweet, yet tart taste of South America"

Dis-Benefit.

I read it in an official publication a little while ago - a dis-benefit! apparently it is in the dictionary though. still an awful word - the opposite of a benefit!

Why do people abuse the English language like that!

One of the "made up words" here is "219". It stands for the second and nineteenth letters of the alphabet and is used in meetings here amongst just a few that truly understand its significance.
