Does anybody know the legal requirements to identifiy letter M or P on components after successful flawdetection depending on either magnetic or penetrant flawdetection is carried out?
I guess it depends on what standard you are inspecting to? ASNT-TC-1A, ASME, EN473 etc...
For the U.S., the standard is to have a report with the testing method indicated (MT) Magnetic Particle Testing, or (PT) Penetrant Testing description of the part, pass/fail, accept/reject, serial number, tested in accordance with etc...
But, as far as I know it is general and accepted practice to include the testing method in which the inspection was done to indicate a general compliance of either design, repair or customer requirements or a combination of thereof.
Just for general purpose, you should indicate what the testing method is on the parts you are inspecting.
Another thing is are they a customer requirement?
Your "Certified" NDT inspectors should also know this standard practice.
Does your company employ a NDT Level III, or consult with one as this would be the first point of contact in regard to your questions?
