Malware Spyware prevention

FYI-

This young lady is a moderator on at least one of the prominent malware sites. In her notes, it appears she is now working for one of the software companies. Anyway, she is competent on the subject.

Here is a nice compilation of free antivirus, antispyware, and firewall. You want one (and only one) of each. Most all of these are free, or have free versions.

Also, some pretty interesting reads. Notice the write-up on disabling auto run; especially if you use a USB a lot.

I haven't had a chance to read the link yet, but I can tell you that the use-only-one advice applies to antivirus software and firewalls, but not to anti-spyware, assuming that they don't have a "real time" component. In fact, I think it's best to use at least two, because one will almost always catch something that the other misses.

By what I researched after seeing your reply, you are accurate. Accurate to say that most are emphatic about not having both antivirus and firewall, but no mention that multiple antispyware is bad. The previous link says the same.:)

I currently use Spybot S&D, any recommendation for a second spyware tool?

Wayne,

Would this program interfere with another antivirus/antispyware program already installed such as Kaspersky?

Stijloor.
What I do is constantly keep Webroot running in the background. Once a week I will run Malwarebytes or even Spybot. There is no single solution out there, although I am impressed with Panda. Two other pieces of software that are critical in my opinion, and it helps that they are free :), is HiJackThis and Process Explorer.

Most sites that offer assistance in removing sypware/malware will usually ask for the log to be posted from HiJackThis. This identifies and can even remove programs from the start-up list.

Process Explorer is something to use when your standard Task Manager won't start-up because of a nefarious program.

One other recommendation to everyone is to change the name of all your AntiSpyware/Malware executable files. I've seen several instances where a program is blocked by spyware/malware, but simply changing the .exe filename will allow it to run.

The only issue I've seen with the use of multiple antispyware software is when trying to run more than at the same time. The only real issue you might end up with is that a file may be locked, and unable to be scanned, or you end up with a "false" positive. So the rule is to just not run one more than other. Also, rootkit scans by one package are more likely to look suspicous to another program than anything else.
