Leadership, as it relates to quality, is most often unexercised. Case in point: how many corporations you know have a CQO? In my experience, most of the time, for lack of proper understanding of what quality is and how to consistently deliver it.

One of the very first sentences in the standard reads:
Many "corporate types" who misunderstand quality as the outcome of inspection and testing will never understand the meaning of that sentence. From there, it will always be a downhill exercise in ISO 9001 implementation towards certification.
Right but that is taking "quality" from what it was and redefining it to affect general business management. When you do that, not everyone has to agree. And to me, that is where the mistake was made -- call it something else because it's not "quality" to old people.

If the management of an organization does not realize that there are numerous business processes that can significantly affect customer satisfaction and product conformity to requirements, they are too obtuse to understand anything that is quality related; you could call it my pot of gold management system and would not make any difference, in my estimation.

These arguments are going to be played out many times in the next seven years - probably more so in the first half as we settle on the lowest common denominator we can accept. I'm dealing with these issues in real time and working to adjust my expectations as required.

I for one, feel ISO has gone too far with some of the direction the new revision has gone. They shouldn't be getting into business plans and running the business. By its very nature, a quality product will lend itself to increasing business, but ISO has gone a little too far here. Identifying interested stakeholders should be discussed by top management, but not as a requirement in a Quality standard. Top management is by far stupid and this needn't be dictated to them. After all, they ARE running their business.

You are correct, they may have gone too far, but as I tell my management, the people who contribute to the revisions of the standard don't just sit around and make this stuff up because it's amusing.

Each of the elements in the standard are there because somebody's project crashed and burned due to that function not being performed adequately.
