I recall reading somewhere that management quality audits are part of Policy Deployment aka Hoshin Planning.

Would anybody with direct experience care to share their thoughts?

Basically Hoshin Kanri is a method to integrate an entire organization’s daily activities with its long term goals. It is a continual process of checking to make sure that what is done each day reflects the intentions, the targets, the vision of company has agreed to pursue.

4 major steps in Hoshin Kanri practicing: Setting, Deployment, Implementation and Review.

The major purpose of Management Quality Audits is to ensure organization daily activities align with what they had documented as ISO principle: Do what we documented, document what we do. This will help in the review step in Hoshin Kanri practice.

Quality audits are only part of the Hoshin process if you feel they are necessary. Hoshin is about setting the direction of the company (at the highest level of planning) and then cascading those strategies and objectives down through the organization.

It is necessary to revisit the hoshin process on a regular basis depending at what level you are working. At the highest level it should be yearly at a minimum, down to monthly or weekly depending on the level of detail.

My experience at a Dana plant is that Hoshin is used to manage and track projects. They even had their ISO 14001 Objectives and targets in there!

Let me make sure I understand this, then.

The management quality audit is the same as any other quality audit, except that the area manager(s) do the auditing. Is that correct?
