I see no valid objection among any of the previous posts to deny an accountant the role of Management Rep.

I DO see many good reasons to appoint someone with accounting skills.

My caveat: Is the appointee truly the equivalent of a manager or is he just some mousy bookkeeper far down the totem pole? The important thing for any MR is that he is able to actually function as an MR, not just wear the title to fill in a blank on an organization chart.

My suggestion for employees (especially quality-trained ones) who work with ANY MR without a solid quality background is to help the MR function by being clear and precise in communicating quality concepts, events, and needs WITHOUT the protective mumbo jumbo of "quality speak" [jargon] which creates silos and barriers to productive, effective, efficient work.

An additional, selfish tip: introduce such untrained, inexperienced persons to the Elsmar Cove where they can ALSO learn from some of the best, brightest, and most experienced quality experts in the world.

additional point I need to make sure about it, is it possible for the MR with accounting to study six sigma? will he get a benefit from studying six sigma? if not, what are the topics and techniques should he be acquainted about to help in his role's accomplishment?

Yes, the Accountant as System Manager may need to study how to develop and improve process-based organizational management systems.

System analysis, system engineering, process analysis, process design, database design, auditing and lean six sigma skills may benefit the individual and the organization.

But the role specified by clause 5.5.2 allows for all of these competencies being contributed by employees other than the MR.

He or she or others in the organization may already be competent so I cannot comment on the need for additional training.

The more he knows about the ISO 9001 standard, the better he can administer it.

One of the best ways to learn the standard is to take an internal auditing class, concentrating more on the portions of the class dealing with the standard (which is most of the course material), and a little less on how to audit.

These courses are available from many sources, inclusing on-line, so it should not be difficult to find one.

That said, ISO 9001 is literally made up of business best practices. Any business college graduate has been exposed to most of it in one way or another. An accountant certainly has. This isn't new stuff as much as it is a slightly different approach on how to manage the business enterprise. Help him to see it from the ISO 9001 perspective. Build on the strengths (which are probably considerable) he already has.

It all depends on "that" accountant if he can become competent to the ISO standard, six sigma.

Not impossible at all :)

Since 1987 we haven't seen any quality system managed by quality manager obtain the goals of zero defect.
Could be different for a quality system driven by an accountant.........................................
I would like to suggest a priest or an analyst like quality represe ntative.
Or even better the magican Merlin.

What if the accountant studied quality tools such as six sigma and he already knows lean manufacturing and he has the ability to implement the quality tools in the organization, is it still possible for him to be a MR?:thanks:

I was part of an ISO 9001 certification were the Comptroller was the MR. Actually worked pretty well. He understood about documentation, measurement, goals, and independent auditing from the git go.

Why can anyone not be MR? As long as they have the basic aptitude, (basic skills/knowledge can be taught), and above all, have the backing from "top management".

How else can a tool room coordinator be transferred to calibration and MR. then, on his first audit, after attending Lead Auditor class, be able to find issues that had been missed for three years by the previous MR (QA Manager)?

As for Six-sigma, it helps, ... required... probably not.
